Modified 4-Wheel Drives
If you build a 4WD up for touring, you’ll soon have to face the battle of weights. Like all vehicles, you can only add so much weight to your 4WD before it becomes illegal. When you plan the build, pay careful attention to what your 4WD can carry and how you use your precious payload.

Caravans, Pop Tops, Camper Trailers, and Hybrids
Ensure your vehicle and caravan combination are at correct weights. Overweight caravans and vehicles are illegal and dangerous.
Boats up to 8 tons. Ensure your vehicle and boat combination are within their weight limits and balanced for a safe journey.
This is the weight that the van places on the car at the tow ball (usually around 7% to 10% of the van’s weight). Your caravan/camper trailer will specify the ball weight of an unloaded van. Your tow bar manufacturer and the vehicle manufacturer will specify the maximum ball weight that the bar can carry.
This is the total weight of the caravan, including everything that is in it, including water, food, clothing, accessories i.e. BBQ, awning, tools, and waste when not coupled to the car.
This is the weight of the fully loaded trailer imposed on the trailer’s axle when it is coupled to the tow vehicle. GTM will always be less than ATM as some of the trailer weight is transferred to the tow vehicle when the trailer is coupled to it.
